SHADOW AI
The rise of shadow AI: A greater threat than shadow IT
Summary: The proliferation of generative AI in the workplace is creating significant risks for data privacy and security, similar to the earlier rise of Shadow IT. As organizations grapple with integrating AI, they must establish stringent governance to mitigate these risks and prevent costly errors.
Details:
Generative AI use in the workplace: Despite many companies restricting AI use, employees are increasingly adopting generative AI tools, leading to unregulated data usage and potential security breaches.
Risks of unregulated AI adoption: Shadow AI, much like Shadow IT, can lead to significant data privacy issues, as generative AI tools often rely on sensitive company data for training and operation.
Need for centralized AI governance: Companies must create centralized strategies for AI governance to ensure data is protected and AI usage is aligned with organizational security policies.
Why is it important: The unchecked use of generative AI tools poses a serious threat to data security, potentially exposing sensitive information and intellectual property. Implementing strong governance and security measures is essential to harness AI’s benefits while safeguarding organizational data.
ChatGPT & GDPR
EU taskforce investigates OpenAI´s ChatGPT over privacy compliance
Summary: The European Data Protection Board (EDPB) taskforce has initiated an investigation into OpenAI’s compliance with GDPR regulations, focusing on the collection, processing, and use of personal data in the ChatGPT service. The preliminary report highlights significant issues related to the legality, transparency, and fairness of data processing practices.
Details:
Data collection and training: The taskforce is scrutinizing the legality of using personal data for training ChatGPT, especially data collected through web scraping without explicit consent.
Transparency issues: The report emphasizes the need for OpenAI to improve transparency about how personal data is collected and used, ensuring that users are adequately informed.
User rights and data accuracy: Concerns were raised about how users’ personal data is handled, with particular focus on ensuring data accuracy and respecting users’ rights under GDPR.
Access: here !
Why is it important: This investigation underscores the critical need for AI companies to comply with stringent data protection laws, safeguarding user privacy while fostering trust in AI technologies. The findings could set a precedent for how AI services handle personal data, impacting not only OpenAI but the broader AI industry.

NEWS
What else was important
Meta AI: Meta notified users worldwide, offering an opt-out option, and planed to start using data from Instagram, Facebook etc. for AI training from June 26, 2024. After a meeting with the Irish Data Protection Commission (IDPC), the company has postponed the use of user data for training its AI applications until further notice. 🛑
Adobe: Adobe is updating its terms of service to clarify that it will not use customer content to train AI, following backlash over concerns that recent updates implied otherwise. We recommend reading the terms and conditions of your implemented services, as many companies, f.e. Slack seem to be changing them to allow the use of data for AI training.
Apple: You may heard it already but we shouldn´t miss it here, Apple has introduced Apple Intelligence, a suite of AI capabilities designed to provide personalized services while maintaining data privacy. As they said, they will solve it via their Private Cloud Computer system. But there will be a ChatGPT integration as well, so be aware what you share. ⚠️
